I have been trolling through various forums lately and one of the more common lament’s seem to be people are on too many email lists.

So what keeps people subscribed to lists that they really would prefer not to be on but are too afraid to get off?

It’s the fear of missing out on something. This seems to be a very strong driver of people’s actions. They would prefer to have their email addresses clogged up with ‘promotional spam’ rather than miss out on the next big thing. What a strange mob we are! And I’m no different.

I’m on lists that email me every day, and while I enjoy their pithy comments on occasions, more often than not I’m having the ‘next big thing’ offered to me with a ‘one time only’ offer.

I suppose this works because I do click through each and every time. Frankly, it’s driving me nuts but I’m too scared of missing out on that final piece of the puzzle that ‘clicks in’ and gets me to where I want to get to faster with an easier way to do it. So I continue to click.

It feels a bit like standing at the edge of a cliff with a raging bushfire at your back.

This is the emotional buying factor I guess that the good copywriters exploit. But it’s one that I just can’t seem to do. I have come to the conclusion that I will not be a good copywriter simply because it’s something I personally don’t want to become. It simply doesn’t sit well with my character. Who was it who said “Unto thyself be true?”

So how in the world do I ever expect to become a good Internet Marketer if I have determined not to use emotional manipulation to sell products?

Well, the jury’s still out on that one. So far, I’m still hanging in there and clicking away.

My saving grace seems to be Google and Video. Google is implementing performance standards and expectations that I seriously like. Video allows me to be me, warts and all. People can judge for themselves by my words, body language and all the other subtle communication methods we Humans normally use for assessing honesty in people.

I wouldn’t mistreat a friend and I suspect neither would you. So why do some Internet Marketers profess an undying appreciation of the people on their lists but continue to bombard them with ‘the latest and greatest?’

Probably because of the same reason we don’t unsubscribe ~ fear of loss.

So if you really do want to unsubscribe from the list merry-go-round, we all need to conquer the fear factor.
