Dealing With Office Distractions, Part Two - Unnecessary Work hanism as we not only build companies; we build communities. In America, we welcome diversity as we pool the intellectual and cultural resources that proudly present themselves to us. This is the world that we fought for, united. This is the world we fight for, united. This is the world with unity; we will not only keep but grow. The world of free enterprise is our world, in America!Dealing with Office Distractions, Part TwoUnnecessary WorkUnnecessary work is a silent productivity killer in the office environment. By unnecessary I don't mean that the work should never be done, but rather more important work should take precedent. These tasks are the small things, the "zero" time activities that can consume your work day if left unchecked. Some examples that come to mind include dealing with email, attending meetings and battling with common office applications. There are three simple things that you can do to combat time leaching activities.1. Get DisciplinedEmail encroaching on your day? Here's a simple solution.... Stop checking it. Yes, you heard me right, stop checking your email. You can't read or reply to something you have never opened. Now before you jump into the antisocial deep end, allow me to qualify my statement. Stop reading and responding to email as soon as it comes in. Set specific times to read and respond to email. Resist the temptation to respond immediately, be disciplined. If you are using Outlook you might as well go in and also turn off the feature to notify you when a new message arrives. You don't care when a message arrives, you'll be checking email at five till the hour now. Email is like the bathroom door after Uncle Frank visits, it is best left unopened as long as possible.2. Get OrganizedOne of the best ways to tackle marathon meetings is to be organized. If you are the organizer, come with a clear agenda and stick to it. Assign someone to be the time keeper. When an agenda item's time slot expires, move on. Be sure to note what was decided and discussed, but if the agenda calls for 15 minutes for the budget, then it should take 15 minutes. Maybe less, but not more. If you are not the organizer of a time waster meeting a It’s always improper to encourage others to do something without offering proper encouragement. In tune with that, I offer you sample and generic suggestions to “globe your business.” 1. All kidding aside folks if you In America today, our population flirts with a population of 300 million. There are over 150 nations represented in that 300 million. Whether by means of divorce or the exercise of choice, women are rapidly entering and advancing in the workplace. Senior citizens account for approximately 25 percent of the population, many of whom continue to work and be active and productive. Teenagers and young adults account for over 25 percent of our population and are continuing their education and enhancing their work skills. The Eurodollar has become a prominent form of currency. All throughout European countries, English is rapidly becoming the language of choice. The Internet is growing at exponential rates and proportions as it enters new homes and schools all across the world each day. Major Banks and corporations continue to merge as they not only strive to survive but do so by striving to grow. Barriers of gender, race and religion are being superseded by the desire and necessity to do business as we strive for social and economic change. The world is at an impasse of opportunity that must not be passed. Everything I just highlighted in the previous paragraph is a good thing. In America, we are the land of opportunity. We are the home of the free; free enterprise and free trade. We want others to participate in our process of business and explore the opportunity to form, build and grow. The module of Capitalism is ours and one we should never forget nor forsake. It is indeed a positive that our population continues to grow. It’s a positive that women are more prevalent in the workplace as their voice and decisions are crucial to a well-balanced and productive society. In America, we celebrate our senior citizens living longer and healthier with the ability to remain productive. In America, we encourage our teenagers and young adults to continue their education and enhance their work skills. The Eurodollar initially designed to compete with the American Dollar has only reminded us that we can never rest on our rewards of the past. We must continue to be innovative and creative as we compete in an ever-growing marketplace. In America, we welcome competition as it makes us better. Many banks and major corporations have received fruitful revenues as a result of merging, thus providing better products and services to the general population. In America, we want our consumers to have viable choices that enable them to make intelligent and informed decisions. The integrations of race, gender and religions has been an extraordinary positive and productive mechanism as we not only build companies; we build communities. Great leadership brings great results. A great manager can get great results but the results reflect on a project or goal, not on the long term process of leading people. A manager can bring a project in on time or perhaps under budget, but a leader gets great results working with people, building relationships, and empowering all members which motivates even better results in the future.Managers can be useful and successful at achieving project goals, but leaders are essential for long term growth, profitability, quality of work life, and positive results in major challenges from business crisis. You know, and possibly have worked with, or for, good managers. Perhaps you have been fortunate and worked with, or for, a great leader. The great leaders are not soon forgotten and are always appreciated. When an organization has great leaders in their management ranks, they suffer less from sabotage and turnover. These organizations are known for their leadership and find it easier to recruit the best and brightest personnel.David Packard and Bill Hewlett were industry leaders that influenced many major business practices with their successes at Hewlett-Packard. Their leadership created an environment that took their products and then their company to the top. Their leadership style has been mimicked by many successful startups. Many technology engineers wanted to work for HP, driven by the leadership and respect driven work environment. These business principles have been studied and taught in business management programs with continued development for open minded executives and top striving organizations.Another business leadership e In America, we welcome competition as it makes us better. Expansion: In this global economy if you’re not seeking expansion; it’s Building Staff Into A Team ially designed to compete with the American Dollar has only reminded us that we can never rest on our rewards of the past. We must continue to be innovative and creative as we compete in an ever-growing marketplace.Suppose you’ve made the effort to decide what kind of people you’re seeking for your business, and you’ve even gone to the trouble of making sure you hire staff who match those criteria. Is that enough? No it’s not. As the business leader, your last critical activity is to build staff into a team, and there are four areas you should address to accomplish this.TELL ‘EM WHAT’S GOING ON Whether a business is large or small, communication is always at the top of staff complaints. Most bosses assume this means they should talk more, but that’s only a small percentage of it. When you hire good people, one of the characteristics that makes them “good” is that they want to know they’re making a difference. How will they know they are doing that? They’ll know it when you build a system to keep them abreast of how the business is doing. Now, you don’t have to tell them everything, but you should keep them informed of the important stuff. “Like what?” you ask?Well, how about the challenges the business is facing, new procedures you’re considering, or new twists the market is taking. You might let them know when you or other leaders are going to take time off, and even give them a little report when you get back. Tell them honestly how their work is affecting the success of the business; people want to know when they’re doing things right. By the way, if there are bad things going on, focus on the effect of those bad things (gossip, customer service issues, incomplete work) rather than pointing out individuals and ‘hanging it on them’. There IS a time to do such a thing, but it’s when you’re meeting one-on-one with the person involved, don’t point out individual problems in general meetings with other staff.LISTEN TO WHAT THEY’RE TELLING YOU This is the second critical piece of good communication. Most business lead In America, we welcome competition as it makes us better. The world of free enterprise is our world, in America!Part 1 of Having a Successful BusinessIn this series, it’s important to show that successful people aren’t better than you; they just made better decisions. This section will see if you’re ready to go out build a better future.Have a little fun at work tomorrow with some of your co-workers. Go up to about three to five people and ask them what they plan on achieving in the next ten years. It’s a safe bet that these same people YOU ask for important advice will give you an answer that will be mediocre at best. Not saying these people aren’t going somewhere…but are they going where you want to ultimately end up?Everyone wants the “American Dream” but they want for that bus to pick them up. Here’s a better example. There are two ways to get to the top of a tree: 1) start climbing or 2) wait for a sprout from the acorn.A brutal truth needs to be understood here. You will not achieve anything unless you are willing to work for it.Your best chance of living YOUR dream life is to be the lead character IN your life. Now I know that everyone leads busy lives and has many things to be accountable for. It’s a huge club. But just how big of a slice of the pie are you willing to cut for yourself? What this boils down to is the one simple characteristic that separates the five percent of people from the other ninety-five percent: DESIRE.Such great achievers like Bill Gates, Donald Trump, our Presidents, and Christopher Columbus all had something in mind when they set out to “conquer the world.”In fact, two great examples involve the afore mentioned names. Bill Gates had dropped out of college but walked right up to IBM and asked for their operating system.IBM had some problems with this particular system so they sold it to a 20-something kid! We all know where Gates is today.< It’s always improper to encourage others to do something without offering proper encouragement. In tune with that, I offer you sample and generic suggestions to “globe your business.” 1. Expansion: In this global economy if you’re not seeking expansion; it’s not because you shouldn’t be. Every two to three year cycle should not only elicit an overall evaluation; it should be a question of growth. Such a question will accompany issues of how, when and where. If your business is doing well then you must explore the option of “reproducing” what is already working. That is to say, open another location. Every 30 to 90 days you should have explored other locations including various cities, states and potentially other countries. Every city is a potential market and every market is an opportunity for growth and expansion. For every city you’re not exploring, assume that your competition is. If not you, have an employee or multiples take some time each month to investigate potential locations and markets. Research of information is the best commodity in the business of competition. You must not only keep up but you must stay ahead. As time is always of the essence and even more so in the world of business, you and your current employees may be consumed with duties and obligations. I suggest you begin an intern program with high school or college students. In many cases, they will work for free as they seek the chance to learn from those who are already doing what they desire to do in the future. You’ll create an opportunity to educate a young person, provide them work experience and learn about markets and trends you may not otherwise have explored. This is being innovative and productive. Meanwhile, you’ll also be advertising your program for free, as schools and students will compete for the opportunity. This advertisement won’t be limited to just the Internships but expose your company to the community and the extensions thereof. Many senior citizens are desperate to exercise their minds and be desired as well as productive in their golden years. I recommend not eliminating them from this equation; however I would advise offering them some compensation package. No matter who you bring in or how often, the idea here is to continually be aggressive and still maintain your current margins while elevating your social status and learning about new frontiers. The person(s) you bring will provide you with different perspectives as they are not jaded by virtue of experience in the industry. Their eyes will reveal the eyes of the consumers at-large. Take advantage of it! 2. Employees: Over the past 10 to 15 years, employers have steadily increased worker productivity through bonuses, incentive packages and commissions. I’ve always believed that the world should be on commission but that is just a fantasy of mine. The reality is
