If you haven't seen it, Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 film adaptation of a Stephen King short story that received seven Oscar nominations. Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne, a city banker, wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. He is sent to Maine's Shawshank Prison in 1947 and receives a double life sentence for the crime. Andy forms an unlikely friendship with "Red" (Morgan Freeman), the man who "knows how to get things."

As their 20 year incarceration unfolds, Andy Dusfesne succeeds in not only orchestrating his successful escape but accumulating enough wealth to allow him to comfortably retire to a secluded beach community in Mexico where Red joins him upon his parole.

What can we borrow from this tale? For some, a double life sentence would would deflate all hope. Instead Andy patiently and meticulously planned his future and then worked his plan. Most jobs are filled from within business or non business organizations from within. Often senior employees are encouraged and indeed rewarded for recommending future good employees to their place of work. Have you ever seen an orchestra producing some truly amazing and inspiring music. I remember seeing an orchestra playing at the Sydney Opera House. I was so impressed with the way all the different instrumental groups blended together to make this magical sound. The conductor's role was very important in keeping all the sections on task and in time. However, all the groups must be able to work together (compliment each other) to produce beautiful harmonics. In a good orchestra, the wind instruments are not in conflict with the brass or percussion instruments. They all have a job to do, and they must be able to complete their task as well as support all the other musical sections in the process. So how does a business work together like a symphony?
