We were excited to and felt lucky to acquire a 150-year-old farmhouse. It was well cared for, however, was showing its age. It hadn’t been remodeled in over a quarter of a century. We wanted something different than what we were seeing in all the subdivisions, and two-story stone and frame structure fit the bill brilliantly. We knew right away that the house had tremendous character.

Decorating isn’t my thing at all; I’ll be the first to admit that.

What’s worse is that my wife is only a little better than I am.

I mean, I didn’t see anything wrong with putting a green bean bag chair in our living room. I guess it was something about traditional styling and an emphasis on forest green.

We do luckily have a friend of the family who is basically a genius when it comes to decorating ideas. She could easily pluck items out of the trash and Better Homes And Gardens would be happy to include them in their magazine if they saw how she’d arranged these items.

When she saw the dining room, she said that we should use Roman blinds, which she said are also called roman shades. She pointed out all of the reasons quickly.

She said that they are classy and different. We could match the roman blinds with the tablecloth with no trouble, easily being able to utilize the versatile fabric, which would go nicely with our antique dining room set.

As well, our new dining room had windows that were not standard sized. She measured them and then said that it’d would be pretty difficult to find curtains and blinds that would fit them. They would have to be specially made.

Next, this house has gorgeous native oak woodwork. We were stripping layers of paint built up over the past century. We really didn’t want to cover up the newly conditioned wood that we had sealed and finished with any curtains or drapes.

Lastly, since she’s so talented, she could make them for us and save us some cash.
