Things To Do In and Around Birmingham
If you’re in Birmingham, and you’ve done all the stuff you can find within the city centre, it can be tempting to write it off. Don’t do that, though, until you’ve taken the time to travel half an hour or so outside Birmingham, and seen some of what the rest of the West Midlands have to offer. There’s more than just the National Indoor Arena and the National Exhibition Centre around, no matter what the Brummies might tell you.If you go out to Dudley – the heart of the Black Country – then you’ll find that there’s quite a lot to do there as well. The Black Country Living Museum there is a massive area that has been set aside for historical re-enactment. You don’t just look at the old steam engines and trams; you get to ride them too. Staff run a preserved 20th century street in an authentic style, with an old sweet shop, a pub a

    What's Valuable About Values?
Let's talk about values...Yours.What kind?Family values, personal values, corporate values. So what are values - and why are they important to creating breakthroughs?Values are things we strive to gain or keep. They are the expression of what is important to us. Values can be concrete things like money, gourmet food, and fast motorcycles, or they can be abstract things like contribution, challenge, or adventure.Values, along with our beliefs about what will satisfy our values, have a decisive impact on the choices we make. We make decisions based on our values. If we believe a proposed action will give us more of what we value, we are likely to take that action. And the degree to which we are likely to take that action, is proportional to the strength of our beliefs and how much we think
I arrived in Bankok in April, knowing it would be hot, but was knocked out by the average 106° weather. After a chaotic trip to my guesthouse, through the most amazing traffic, I collapsed on the bed in nothing but my birthday suit. Prior to arriving in Thailand, I had researched what to pack. I wanted to bring comfortable clothing, but also pieces that would be appropriate for the various wats or temples I planned to visit.

To Thais, being sabai jai means having a contented heart, referring to a calm disposition. Foreigners or farang are thought to behave in a contradictory manner, being easily frustrated and exhibiting a quick temper or jai rawn. I promised myself that I would blend in to my new surroundings and maintain an inward tranquility so prized in the Land of Smiles.

On my second day in Bankok I was headed to the former Thai capital Ayutthaya and the Royal summer palace, Bang Pa-In. Forgetting all of my carefully selected couture, I threw on the coolest pieces I had. Dressed in a sleeveless tank and black cotton skirt that hit above my knee, off I went. That was the end of my inner and outer tranquility.

Search Engine Optimisation: One Link is Better than Ten
That can’t be right! Shouldn’t ten links be better than one? It is usually the case where more is better. However, when it comes to gaining links, having more links isn’t necessarily better than having a few good links. In fact, having too many irrelevant links could possibly harm your website’s visibility within the search engines. These days, search engines are placing more emphasis on incoming links to a website when evaluating rank. The reason being is because they are difficult to obtain from trusted sources (a "by the book" website such as the Dmoz directory) and it is a good way to partially eliminate the group of people who abuse the "on the page" factors of optimisation (page spamming). How is this so? Well, if you have someone who is abusing the "on the page" factors and they have no trusted links to their page (they w

Balancing Acts: Work, Family, and the Entrepreneur Mom
Do you remember the time before the internet and computers? I barely do…and I can’t imagine how anyone doing business could stay in business. The information highway has been expanded into a super highway of information covering the globe and traveling with super sonic speed. There was a time when ‘selectric’ typewriters were the cutting edge of electronics and any office secretary (oops!), administrative assistant could not wait to get to work so she could type a letter, any letter. What about the time before copiers really began to emerge, the old stenographic copy machine with the horrible blue ink that was on your favorite blouse before day’s end. Worse still was the infamous ‘carbon paper’ for duplicate copies. I can imagine that there were many frustrated women who type thousands of pages because she could not seem to

    Media Relations: Minority Media Matters
Your boss just stopped by your office. He tells you that he has decided to put you in charge of a major upcoming news release. He wants you to reach the broadest possible audience. He explicitly tells you to leave no stone unturned. You respond by promptly ignoring 38 million Americans.According to New California Media, 13 percent of the U.S. population now turns primarily to ethnic media. If you only pitch publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and Time, you will leave out a huge chunk of your potential audience. More than ever, a complete media strategy requires reaching out to ethnic publications. You might consider a publication such as Latina Magazine, with its 800,000 upscale Hispanic female readers.Or Chinese Daily News, with its 720,000 Asian readers in California.Or Black

As soon as I stepped on the bus, I became acutely aware that I had forgotten the dress code, but it was too late. My seatmate was an impeccably dressed British woman who looked appalled by my very presence. She avoided conversation and eye contact with me, and we rode to Ayutthaya in silence.

Unable to fully enjoy the Buddha statues and architecture that spanned centuries, I was consumed by the thought that I was offending past and present Thais. I was especially distracted when all my bare bits were in the company of monks. Overheated, sweaty and blotchy red, we headed to our next stop, Bang Pa-In the colonial-style summer digs for the Royal Family. We were told that clothing would be provided to cover knees and shoulders if we weren’t dressed appropriately. I should have taken the offer. Instead I looked in my bag and grabbed a black sundress that I had stashed at the last minute. A frilly flamenco looking number, I looked
