Have you ever had a dream about someone you hadn’t seen in years and then saw them a few days or weeks later out of the blue?

The other day, a friend of mine came up to me with a story. He said that he had a dream about a girl he knew when he was younger, maybe 15 years ago. He said that the girl was so vivid in the dream that he knew he was going to see her. And, guess what? About a week later he saw her for the first time in many years.

Psychologists are taught that dreams are just the ramblings of your subconscious mind. When asked to interpret a dream, they usually look at symbolism and try to decipher what your mind is really trying to say.

This is all fine and good, except that they think of the mind as an island. And, as we all know, “No man is an island.”

The medical model assumes that the subconscious mind is limited to only things it has experienced in its lifetime. Yes, the subconscious might have incredible abilities to recall obscure things, or have any amazing memory, but ultimately it is just the basement of your mind and there is no tunnel down there that’s connects to other basements, houses, or other worlds.

Even the idea of a collective conscious is considered New Age and silly.

In a world where synapse response, neurons, and dendrites are held to be God, it is hard to accept any explanation other than the “dreams as brain farts” explanation.

But our medical community is still in awe at the power of dreaming and the brain.
