Pop-Ups - Not Just Annoying - But Dangerous
Everyone that surfs the internet regularly has had problems with pop-ups from time to time. They’re annoying and bothersome, opening new windows right and left when visiting a website that pushes them to your computer. If you try to close one, 5 more seem to magically appear where before there was none. Worse yet, pornographic ads can come up as your children innocently play on their favorite webpage.Pop-ups are a form of advertising that many companies use to grab your attention and redirect you to their

When we start psychotherapy we have to learn how to look at our personality and adjustment to life in a meaningful way, and to this end the therapist will take us through an induction process. It isn't set out as an induction, he simply starts doing what he is going to do all along, but an induction is in effect what it is. The induction involves no teaching and no persuasion, and isn't even remotely like brainwashing. On the contrary, it is an experience of liberation.

Our symptoms are integral to our personalities

The first new idea we encounter when we start psychotherapy is that our symptoms are not something separate from our personalities, but an integral part of us. This means our adjustment to life as a whole needs to be examined, and to change. This approach is completely different from that adopted in other areas of medicine, where the doctor gives us something, or performs an operation, which makes the illness 'go away' without involving ourselves as individuals, and with the aim being for us to get back to the way we were before.

Accepting this basic premise is not easy, and many people who begin psychotherapy take the matter no further once they realise this. My therapist tells me it is not unusual for patients to attend for one or two sessions, then 'flee'.

Our lives are controlled by feelings

Part of the induction process is to get used to the idea that our lives are controlled by our feelings, and not by our reason. I grew up believing that the only mental activity worth paying attention to was rational thought, and my therapist's approach, which emphasised the importance of emotions, clashed head-on with this.

    Building a Strong Muscular Base
Beginners should always stick to compound movements over isolation exercises. Exercises such as the squat, dead lift and pull-up work more than one muscle group and will allow you to build that strong base that you need.Examining your physique takes an honest look at yourself. Take a look in the mirror, do you have chicken legs, are you narrow shouldered, slim, fat, etc. Some of these things you can’t always change but you can create the “illusion” of things you don’t have which is one of the great thi

The next step is to see that almost every aspect of our present is determined by what happened to us in the past. When we experience feelings and behave in a certain way now, we are re-playing feelings and behaviour learned in childhood.

    Facing the truth

Experience has taught us that we only have one enduring weapon in our struggle against mental illness: the emotional discovery of the truth about the unique history of our childhood. [Miller 1995]
Psychotherapy is as rigorous as any science or philosophy with respect to the aim of establishing facts and facing the truth. The truth we are seeking is the truth about our emotional lives, which is inseparable from our 'being' as a whole, and which was moulded during childhood.

    Everything is open to interpretation

Another aspect of the adjustment which takes place is getting used to the idea that what we say and do, or what anyone else says or does, does not have to be taken at face value. Everything is open to interpretation, that is, meanings can be found in it other than those we consciously intended.

    Introspection is valuable

Another feature of the psychotherapeutic frame of mind fostered by the induction is the idea that introspection - delving into oneself - is OK. There is a tendency in our culture to dismiss introspection as self-indulgence. But we live in an inner world as well as an outer one. The way we perceive and interact with the outer w
