Allow me, for a moment, to speak directly to our Democratic and Republican friends who have found their way to this issue of The Free Kansan. You probably were directed to this newsletter by someone at work who always talks politics and who insisted that you read this. Or, perhaps, it was your crazy brother-in-law who never can quite seem to fit into the mainstream way of looking at things.

“OK,” you’re thinking to yourself, “I’ll give it a quick read to make Bob happy.”

Do you know why your friend or your relative directed you to this newsletter? Do you know why that person is a Libertarian? They’re tired. They’re tired of promises of what American can be, but never seems to become. They’re tired of the two major parties that—taken together—make the perfect mommy and daddy state and seem to be working their way towards the perfect police state. They’re fed up with the two-headed monster whose only goal in life seems to be to assert ever greater control over our lives from Washington D.C. or Topeka.

Let me ask you. Do you ever get tired of that? Have you been voting Republican or Democrat or Republican and then Democrat for years hoping for a better America, a better Kansas, and more freedom; only to be disappointed by more of the same?

“Alright,” you’re saying, “You have me nodding my head in agreement, but how is becoming part of a tiny party with no chance to win anything going to change the situation? I’d just be throwing my time, my money, and my vote out the window. Besides, I hear you Libertarians believe in some crazy things. I don’t think I could go along with some of them.”

First, the Libertarian Party is only tiny because many Republicans and Democrats don’t know—given all the facts—that they are actually Libertarians at heart. I know because until just recently, I didn’t know it. I was a life-long registered Democrat who usually voted independently based on the candidate rather than the party. I have always been socially liberal (I don’t want the government in my business or personal decisions) and fiscally conservative (I don’t want high taxes or think government is the solution to every problem). I guess I landed to the “left” side of the line because personal freedom always was a stronger impulse in my thinking than fiscal conservatism. Nonetheless, both concepts were important to me.

In 2004, disillusioned with both parties, I reregistered independent. I had voted Libertarian on several occasions, but more in protest than in understanding.

The Libertarian Party is growing—the country’s fastest growing party—because people like you and me are finding that this party matches our beliefs. It is the third largest party and stands the best chance—through committed effort—to change the status quo advocated by establishment Democrats AND Republicans.

Second, Libertarians don’t really believe in crazy things. We actually keep our philosophy pretty simple. We believe in two fundamental principles—personal freedom and personal responsibility. I know these are radical concepts in our modern world. We believe that a responsible, intelligent, educated, adult human being has a right to believe and act as he or she chooses as long as his or her actions don’t harm others. We don’t believe that the government should be a father figure and final arbiter of acceptable behavior. We clearly see the dangers posed by government using behavior control as an excuse—which it does every day—to justify ever greater intrusiveness.

It takes a lot of practice and a certain level of wisdom to understand and live freedom in that way. It is a constant fight with our selfish, human impulses to want others to conform to our standards and use government as a tool to achieve those ends; but the benefits of a truly Libertarian society are worth the effort.

Republicans and Democrats are scared this year and scared they should be. They have taken your vote for granted for too long. Their prescription for any problem, it seems, is more of them—more government control. Take your own nodding throughout this article as evidence that you agree.
