Member You - Cheryl Rickman Interview
Snappy Rejected-Job-Seeker Comebacks it was mainly circumstance that led me to start-up, and the support and encouragement of my partner, James. And I think it is that circumstance - which creates entrepreneurs. The majority of self-made types are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.People we know have heard some absolutely monstrous things from recruiters and employers during their job hunts. When you hear one of these outrageous/insulting/mind-blowing remarks, you want to reach through the phone and strangle someone. But since that isn’t possible, here’s what to say, instead:HE: I’m sorry, we liked your qualifications but we offered the position to a person who comes from the exact same kind of background.YOU: Of course, that’s excellent, and I can certainly understand your desire to minimize new thinking. Best of luck to you.SHE: Your resume shows six of the protocols we’re looking for, but we’re holding out for eight.YOU: Not a problem! Thanks for letting me know. It’s not a good match in any case, because I’m focusing on employers who value brains and creativity over skillsets that one can acquire in two days of training.HE: We’re not going to be able to budge on the salary. We thought you would join us for the same salary you made at your last job.YOU: Well, that’s lovely. I am certain you’ll find loads of excellent people who change jobs for other reasons - perhaps the paint colors on the walls.SHE: We can’t hire you because your background is too entrepreneurial. We’re looking for true corporate types.YOU: Well, of course! That mouth-clamped-shut, eyes-averted posture is so hard for people like me to master.HE: Before we set up an interview, we wanted to check references, run a credit check, and get your college transcripts.YOU: That’s innovative! Sort of an unobtrusive intelligence test, to judge a person’s self-esteem. Is this the point where I say ‘you must be kidding’?HE: No, I’m serious.YOU: Awesome - you’re screening for the most self-worth-challenged segment of the job-seeking population. What a novel approach - I have some friends in halfway houses who might be great candidates for you.SHE: We liked your resume, and so we’re sending you a password, to take our online integrity tes Also, I guess some of my ‘entrepreneurial spirit’ came from my mum. She passed away in 1991 when I was just 17. And, to cope with the trauma and loss, I bega Understanding Today's Generation: The Millenials Cheryl Rickman runs her own group of businesses CherryJam - with her partner James in Hampshire. Her first company WebCritique a web copywriting and marketing consultancy, helps other businesses to improve their online presence and Cheryl provides workshops to local businesses on these issues. WebCopywriter was borne from WebCritique and provides web copy for small and large businesses alike. Her clients include AnitaRoddick.com, Business Link Wessex, Motorola and Microsoft. Cheryl’s other main business is the UK’s largest independent online music magazine - ilikemusic.com.You have heard of Generation X, Generation Y and Baby Boomers. There is a new generation called the Millenials, and they are now of the marrying age. In order to best serve this new group of twenty-somethings, it’s important to understand where they are coming from.Millenials have a strong bond with the technological age. They were practically born with a mouse in their hands and understand text messaging and instant messaging (also known as IM’ing) better than many of us understand how to email. With their ease around a keyboard, they have a different mentality about interacting with people and within their relationships. Understanding this generation will help you be successful with your clientele. In general, the Millenials:•Are well educated. Most have a post-high school education. •Are more financially self-sufficient as compared to older generations. •Are results oriented. They want results and have little concern for the manner in which it is achieved. •Want to be heard and to share their ideas. •Want to be involved in every aspect of the project. •View maintaining contact as essential, but not via phone or face-to-face meetings. Text messaging and emails are the preferred means for communication. •As a result of their communication styles, there is a higher expectation for an immediate response. There is an expectation that you are available 24/7 and your replies will be lightening-quick. •Seem to have less ability to manage their stress levels. So what does this mean to you? To begin with, their inability to manage their stress may cause you to feel stressed out. Do your best not to get caught up in the client’s stress. Maintaining a calm and removed position will help you stay objective and portray a level of confidence that will help in calming your client.Make sure you set firm, but reasonable, boundaries. The client may have the belief that “the customer is always right.” If you fall into this premise, you may end up doing so Cheryl has been a freelance writer for the past nine years, writing on business issues for Better Business and Internet Works magazine, and interviewing business leaders and music celebrities. As well as writing The Small Business Start-Up Workbook, which has a foreword by Dame Anita Roddick, Cheryl is author of booklets, 111 winning ways to promote your website successfully and 127 insider ideas on creating a winning website and has been a Judge at Hampshire’s Awards of Web Excellence for the past two years. The Interview DS: What inspired you to follow an entreprenerial path and in particular what inspired you to write the Small Business Handbook? CR: Well, I was never the ‘selling packets of sweets’ kind of playground budding entrepreneur at school, and my main dream was to become a freelance writer, but somewhere at the back of my mind I liked the idea of running my own business, something small and (dare-I-say-it) manageable. (I now know that smaller businesses are often harder to manage due to the lack of people to delegate tasks to). However, it was mainly circumstance that led me to start-up, and the support and encouragement of my partner, James. And I think it is that circumstance - which creates entrepreneurs. Cheryl’s other main business is the UK’s largest independent online music magazine - ilikemusic.com.If you run a small business you have probably already found yourself having to be multi-skilled in accountancy, law, interview techniques and a whole host of other areas. If your small businesses doesn't have the resources to hire a marketing firm, you will also need to be adept at getting your products or services publicized.Things are not as simple as they once were. There are so many media outlets out there that even large marketing agencies are finding the array of possibilities daunting. There has certainly been a shift towards digital marketing, ranging from the now established web banner ads to RSS feeds, mobile telephone messaging and pod casting, not to mention the use of blogs and viral marketing. There has been a clamour to put out on line video messages as the definition between television and internet has become increasingly blurred.Let's be realistic. If your business cannot afford an agency, you are unlikely to be at the cutting edge of these new technologies. Do not despair. If you can't beat 'em then don't join 'em! As marketing spends have been stretched more thinly across all the available media, this has left traditional outlets struggling to win business. Print media has been hit particularly hard as have tv and radio. This means that in these outlets it is a buyer's market with plenty of bargains to be had.Perhaps tv may still be out of your financial reach, but newspapers and magazines will fall over themselves to offer one-off production facilities and will advise on how best to get your message across. Radio is more user-friendly as ever, offering low cost script-writing and production expertise. If you are planning a marketing campaign on a modest budget, I would seriously consider these options. If your company trades in a discreet locality then a joint local radio and press campaign could be put together at little expense. You could even put together a do-it-yourself national campaign using these traditional media. There was a tim Cheryl has been a freelance writer for the past nine years, writing on business issues for Better Business and Internet Works magazine, and interviewing business leaders and music celebrities. Pharmacy technician career is a fairly rewarding one and experienced people earn handsome salary in this profession. The salary of pharmacy technicians is determined on a per-hour basis. It generally falls under $10-$18 per hour.Pharmacy technicians can earn properly only if they are licensed technicians. This certificate proves that the technicians are capable of handling independently, as they learn all the skills required to be a pharmacy technician. They have to undergo recertification every two years. During the period of recertification, they are allotted with some contact hours. In this period, they can earn from various sources like pharmacy colleges, on-the-job training stores and other places. They can also open up some pharmacy technician training programs and create awareness regarding the role of pharmacy technicians. They can start earning for nearly 10 hours a day, if the technicians are employed under pharmacists. Experienced pharmacy technicians earn a lot more than the average earnings per hour of the market.Pharmacy technicians can earn well if they are sincere and dedicated towards their work. This is a reference of their earnings taken in May 2004. Nearly 50% of pharmacists earn $9 to $14. On an average, the median hourly earning of pharmacy technicians is around $11. The top 10% earn more than $16. The industries that employ pharmacy technicians pay them reasonably well. In departmental stores, they may get $10.The certified technicians can earn more if they work in the evenings or weekends. As they gain experience, they have an excellent advantage of having a perfect control during their working hours. Usually, pharmacy technicians are required all through the day and this naturally enables them to put more hours on work The Interview DS: What inspired you to follow an entreprenerial path and in particular what inspired you to write the Small Business Handbook? They have placed themselves at the center of their business universe, and although in theory they can take all the time off they want – they can’t ever. On top of that, if they want to increase their income it usually means working harder. In fact, many are afraid to grow their businesses at all, because they think it will mean more work and more stress. And it will! The added revenue just isn’t worth it to them. Now these same entrepreneurs (and you may be one of them) think the way out is to create some form of “passive income.”What they mean by this is income based on a product you create once and then earn money from forever – or at least a long time – without having to do much – or any – additional work. The fantasy is to sit on the beach, sipping margaritas, while the money rolls in.Well let me tell you – without solid systems, there ain’t no such thing.Unless they are totally digital, passive income streams require logistics and fulfillment, creation, upkeep and production, just like any other business.Without good systems, delegation and outsourcing - passive income is far from passive. And without a strong sense of personal focus and a concept of your own highest-and-best-use, passive income can end up taking 20 hours a day. Or more. Forget about sitting on the beach...Of course, it’s not all bad news. What we call passive income should really be called renewable income. BUT WITHOUT GOOD SYSTEMS – it will still be a ton of work.So here’s the good news: strong systems can transform the myth of passive income into reality. Can you see all the various steps that go into “passive income?” And that’s without addressing the joint ventures, email writing, speaking, offline PR, and networking that go into marketing a successful passive income stream.Hey – passive, it isn’t. It’s a CR: Well, I was never the ‘selling packets of sweets’ kind of playground budding entrepreneur at school, and my main dream was to become a freelance writer, but somewhere at the back of my mind I liked the idea of running my own business, something small and (dare-I-say-it) manageable. And I think it is that circumstance - which creates entrepreneurs. The majority of self-made types are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.Make sure the condition of the property you want to buy will survive market conditions before seeking a commercial real estate mortgage. When you go to purchase a new residence, a good lender does a thorough financial background check on the individual seeking to borrow money. On the other hand, when you go to apply for a commercial real estate mortgage, the lender’s greatest concern is the property. Some of the most important issues include your credit score. But that’s not enough. The lender wants to make sure the property is in pristine condition and will survive tumultuous market conditions.Research the commercial marketBefore deciding to seek a commercial real estate mortgage, scout the city or town and get a sense of the market conditions. Are there many “for rent” or “for sale” signs for multi-family units such as offices or apartments? Is the commercial property in a part of town that receives enough traffic flow or is it difficult to locate? Talk to professionals in the area to find out where you can find the best deals before obtaining a commercial real estate mortgage.Prepare to put money downJust as you would put money down on the purchase your dream house, you will need to come up with money for a commercial mortgage. Most lenders want between 15 and 20 percent down. Next, you are ready to see if you can pre-qualify for a property. A loan officer will put together a loan package before giving you a letter of interest. Then, the lender will review the file and create a loan document.Gathering documents for mortgageYou can begin getting together the documents you need in order to move along the commercial mortgage process. Put together your employment history for the past two years as well as with salary, employment dates, pay stubs and the contact information of your employers. You should also figure out your net worth and list all other assets. Make sure you have all of your tax records organized. Bring along your social security card, the last three s Also, I guess some of my ‘entrepreneurial spirit’ came from my mum. She passed away in 1991 when I was just 17. And, to cope with the trauma and loss, I began to fill my time with trying to further my writing career. Years after her death, one of my mother’s best friends told me that mum always believed that I would someday run my own business. I had no idea that she thought that until a few years into my first business, but that gave me the inspiration I needed to think about writing my book. Having succeeded in business through a combination of determination and my own trial and error, I longed to write a book that would offer insight and encouragement to young entrepreneurs like me who dreamt of running their own business, but didn’t have the faintest idea where to start. Ultimately, The Small Business Start-Up Workbook is the culmination of that dream. DS: Did you have any help setting up WebCritique your first company or were you going it alone? CR: In terms of advice I received help and guidance from my Local Enterprise Agency, but got most of the information I needed from the web. In terms of finance my personal bank turned me down for a business loan, so I set up a new account – great while it was free, but not so useful now it isn’t. Choosing the right business bank is a crucial decision and worth spending time on. I’m with Lloyds but wouldn’t recommend a bank who’s business managers are difficult to get hold of and don’t see the longer-term bigger picture. My book includes questions to ask banks, and you can compare UK banks at www.bba.org.uk or www.moneyfacts.co.uk DS: What was the biggest challenge you faced in bringing your idea to fruition? How was it overcome? CR: The first was to challenge my own assumptions about whether or not I could do it. Everybody has some
