It will probably be no surprise to many people that there are many online dictionaries available online today. What might be a surprise is the lack of online dictionary reviews. I know because I tried to find a site which would give me a quick summary of some of the key features of some of the more popular sites.

So, I decided to write my own since I had spent quite a bit of time researching a number of the online dictionaries available.

I’ve listed my views on each site below. They are not listed in any order of preference. I’ve just summarised the main features so that you can make your own decisions.

Merriam Webster

The Merriam Webster site is quite comprehensive. It contains both an online dictionary and an online thesaurus. When searching for a word, the definition returned also has an audio button so you can hear how it is pronounced.

The site also has links to Word games so it can be quite entertaining to spend some time there. They also have a dedicated site for the young surfer. The link called Merriam Webster for KIDS actually takes you to their site called Word Central.

One other excellent feature about this site is their free toolbar. With this you will be able to search for words at anytime while you are surfing.

This is also a comprehensive site with an online dictionary and an online thesaurus. This site also features audio pronunciations of words. It also has word games. A single word translation is available for many languages.

The site is quite busy with many adverts that can be distracting.

At first appearance the site looks very basic, but looks are deceiving. The site gets right down to the business of providing you a dictionary to search. Whilst there are no audio pronunciations of words this site does search many dictionary databases to give you a list of definitions. This can be useful if you want to compare and contrast the definition of a word.

Like onelook, this site is very basic in appearance and again it is a site which gets right down to the business of searching for words.

There are no word games or any audio on the site. They do however have a very clever feature which I found very impressive. Simply double click on any word on their site and you are instantly shown a definition for the word you clicked.

Their definitions also provide a really useful crossword helper.
